From an early age Audie, Earphones, and SOVAS Voice Arts Award-winning audiobook narrator R.C. Bray despised reading. Truly hated it with a passion.

And audiobooks? Even worse. Those were for people too lazy to read (not to be confused with those like himself who didn’t want to read to begin with).

R.C. eventually got older and wiser (he was always good-looking) and eschewing his capricious convictions fell head-over-heels with reading. Not just to learn words like “eschew” and “capricious” so he could use them in a bio line, but because someone was actually going to give him money to do it.

Julia Whelan is an actor, writer, and audiobook narrator. She is perhaps most well known for her acting work on ABC’s Once and Again and her award-winning narration of over 200 audiobooks (including Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl). Her debut novel is forthcoming.

After a healthy career as a child actor, Whelan attended Middlebury College and Oxford University, graduating with a degree in English and Creative Writing.

This was such an entertaining adventure! The plot was intense, the characters very believable the narrators were excellent as well. I really enjoyed my time with it.

First part of the books focuses on what phenomenon generated the life extinction from Earth, but as well on the qualities and flaws of our main characters. While in space, Commander Angela Brown tries to understand the origin of a light wave that seems to cut communications with parts of the world. Stranded on the International Space Station, she struggles to survive with few supplies, hoping that someone will answer her radio messages.

On Earth, army aviator Vaughn Singleton cannot understand what could have possibly happened to cause the disappearance of humanity. Together with his astronaut buddy Mark, took part in an experimental fight. They were both (technically) in space at the time the world ended, which lucky for them – meant they survived the apocalypse. Shortly after, Mark is killed in an accident, so Vaughn must learn to survive on his own.

Until they come in contact with each other, we learn more about the characters. I was mentioning in the beginning that Angela and Vaughn are two people with their own issues, with their own flaws. The interesting part was how they both came to accept the loneliness and how they dealt with being the only survivors. When they finally find each other, the focus will be on bringing Angela home and for that, they combine their knowledge and hopes.

The intensity of the story follows a less than usual trend. We start in full action, we have a moment of accommodation, then another intensity spike. I loved that! The narration was exceptional, if not more! R.C. Bray and Julia Whelan were more than perfect for the roles. Their voice when in line with the excitement of the action and went even beyond that. Funny thing is this is exactly how I would have imagined Angela and Vaughn’s voices to sound like: one is kind and gentle, but determined, when situation asked, the other is a little rough around the edges but strong and brave as well.

This is the kind of book one can write pages about. It made me think about what we are doing to ourselves and to our planet and much more. If it were not for some chapters where I felt the action was dragged and my hope for hearing both narrators interact, I would have gone with my 5 stars. I cannot wait for the new book in the series! This was yet another great tour that I was lucky to be part of!
