Jeff Malmquist is unaccountably catapulted to the year 2060. He finds himself in New Gary, Indiana, a labor camp of one million Chicagoans, their identities hacked and incriminated as pedophiles through the collusion of a corrupt US Government, the Russian cybermafia, and China (which runs the USA behind the scenes). He escapes to Chicago, only to find himself in a full-scale replica of Ancient Rome in China, erected for the wealthy country’s amusement and manned by a million enslaved Italians. Or did China come first? As he struggles to orient himself in these synchronized urban labyrinths, he is plunged back to real Ancient Rome, before being flung yet further into the future: It’s 2115 and the Chinese Empire rules the world. The former Western hemisphere is now the American Special Administrative Region, a vast Cantonese-speaking slave colony. Malmquist will soon be shipped to the most opulent city the world has ever known for an unspeakable fate.

A dystopian satire both bleak and funny, The Kitchens of Canton distills the worst of our present and future societies into a strangely seductive maze of a story.

My Review:

This is one of those difficult books that keep you thinking on the subject long after you’ve gone through all its pages. At least this is what happened to me. “The Kitchens of Canton” is not an easy book to follow, as it jumps from one scenery to another, from one action to the next and even from one language to another.

We have our main character Jeff Malmquist who is lost in time and space. Somehow he is sent to different future scenarios, in a world wither ruled by China or Ancient Rome. He is trying to understand how he got there, why and what is happening? And I think that’s the most important question this book is raising. What is happening with us as humans, what is happening with our society. I see it as a raised flag towards what we see around us, the amount of indecency flowing around and most importantly, the lack of coherence.

The different languages used in the book may be confusing to us, as well as to our main character. We get to experience with him the puzzlement and the disturbing feeling caused by all the events. The sexual content is on the highest level. The intimate act is lacking emotion now. It is simply something that must be performed for the happiness of our masters. Huh, ain’t that funny? (I apologize!)

Isham Cook’s story is not one to be taken lightly. Society needs to shift its course towards the true values. We need to be focused on the things and subjects that really matter. Or else we become vain, dump and mere slaves of our own misery.  I liked the approach, I liked how it was put into pages – 4 out of 5 stars.

About the AuthorIsham Cook

American novelist and essayist based in China since 1994. Writing philosophy: downmarket, big concept, provocative, discriminating, outrageous. Kirkus Reviews calls my second novel The Kitchens of Canton “poignant…language barriers abound, with dialogue in Cantonese, Italian, and Latin, but Cook isn’t merely interested in verbal language—body language, customs and rituals, and symbols are also on full display. The book also explores Americans’ complicated relationship with sex, juxtaposing it against their seemingly comfortable relationships with weapons and violence. An insightful, unconventional, and risqué view of present-day culture.”

My Review:

I received a review copy of this book and “Dancing with Armando” is a book that puts in comparison not only three different women, at different ages, but as well different types of life styles. I must admit that I was expecting so much more in the beginning, but once I was done reading it, I did understand all the concepts behind Sophie, Iris and Heaven.

A hippie grandmother, an unhappy mother and a talented daughter, all meet and for this spectacular combination of personalities. Each has tried to make the best for her family. Sophie was abandoned by her lover and father of her child when Iris was just a baby and she has never heard of him before. She has dealt with the pain ever since the best way she could: forgetting and following her ideals, being an artist, in a hippie sort of way. Iris has become a mother herself and, even if her marriage is not the strongest, she is doing her best to offer a father to her daughter. Heaven, on the other hand, is trying to reunite past with present and make a career in music.

But who is actually Armando? Well, Armando is more than a character. I see him as a concept, since the expression “dancing with Armando” is used several times with a deeper meaning. Dancing with Armando is like an option to escape an imperfect life.it is that one special moment when you can let it all go and imagine yourself someone different. Is the ideal life we all want.

I did not like how the encounter between father and daughter was presented and it made Iris seem immature for a married woman with a child. Also, I would have wanted to know more about Iris’s marriage, how bad it was before the shift in their lives and how it was after that moment. But other than that, I have no complains.

This is the sort of book that makes you reflect on the good and bad in your life and nudges you towards appreciating all the good. If things are not as one would like, the only solution is to fix them, not run away. At least this is the idea that I was left with after finishing it. Hope you like it as well.

Praise for Finding Rose Rocks

The name of the book comes from a type of mineral formation found almost exclusively in Oklahoma….and has a beautiful backstory to it. The literature standard is written with depths of emotional dilemmas, and I believe that what’s makes this book stand out.

The flow of the story is flawless as far as I am concerned. Love and life is precious, but it will never be flawless. I highly recommend this read. It is a great one!

This is the kind of book you’ll want to curl up with on a nice comfy chair beside a fire on a cold winter’s day. A lovely romance about getting a second chance at love later in life.

Book Excerpt

Take an inside look at Finding Rose Rocks with this thrilling excerpt.
Jennifer refused to let Ben’s ordeal revive her old jellyfish phobia. She changed into her swimsuit and grabbed a towel. She’d be most visible in front of the lifeguard tower, so it’s where she entered the surf and forded the mild current until she reached the choppy calm beyond the breakers. Alone save for a curious seagull, she let the sea rock her in their guarded reunion. Fellow creatures shared the water with her, but she ignored them and let them do the same. Children’s squeals and deeper adult voices carried over the waves and reached her submerged ears in wavering echoes. She was a peace there. From time to time she drifted off course, and a dozen lazy back strokes realigned her with the lifeguard tower. Jennifer’s astrological element was water, emotional and intuitive. She’d grown up with her mother’s belief in such notions, and she would never quite shake them. Troy was earth, strong and steady, grounded, of the land. Water and earth were compatible. Jennifer should have nurtured Troy, supplied him with life-giving sustenance rather than running off to let him face the summer’s drought without her. Ben’s element was air. She’d never asked him his sign, but she knew. He was a rare winged creature too elusive for her with his almost indiscernible touch and the hint of scintillating breath on her bare breasts. Jennifer held herself partially to blame for Ben’s accident. Before she’d come along he didn’t go into the ocean, instead content to stroll along its shoreline. He’d wanted to be with her and followed her into her watery realm. She’d led him to danger like a siren. He’d mentioned his allergy to bee stings in an offhanded way, making little of it. She should’ve honed in on the subject, asked what he carried in his faded blue backpack. The signs were there and she’d paid no attention.
Jennifer checked her position in the water, found all to be well, and returned to her thoughts. If she went back to the Lazy J Ranch, would she and Troy reunite or would she end up back in Oklahoma City where she’d started? Trading California for a cowboy? She’d have to be crazy, or crazy in love with a man whose only connection to the ocean were waves of flaxen wheat and a prairie’s endless sea of tall grass.
Something brushed Jennifer’s leg, and she bolted upright. A piece of kelp bobbed beside her and she flung it away. She’d become chilly anyway and made her way to shore.

My Review:

I think this is my first time travel romance, which is strange. How come I’ve never come across one? Ok, never mind. For one first time travel romance books I’ve ever read, this was not that bad, though I would have expected more.

The blurb describes well enough the plot but let me give you a bit more. Katie ends up in Lord Robert’s alchemy lab after his failed experiment to obtain gold. She finds herself in Elizabethan England, with no internet or phone (or denim), captive in a strange man’s house. But as scared as she may be of the entire situation, Robert has at least the same amount of worry. Step by step, they will earn each other’s trust and Katie will be thrown into a world of secrets and spies.

I have no complains when it comes to the writing, my main issues are related to how the story was built. For me, it was not very believable how easily Katie has forgotten about her family. I had the feeling her worry was mostly for the material things she would miss, not necessarily her loved ones.

As a trigger warning, there is a scene of violence towards her that was too much for me. I have not experienced such acts, but I would expect any woman to fight a little, not accept it and that’s it.

Lord Robert was living too much in his father’s shadows. He gave me the impression of being afraid of him, like he was cruel, old man. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad book, it has things that I enjoyed. As I was mentioning, the writing is not bad at all. For example, Lord Robert’s panic when he sees this strange woman, dressed in weird clothes, in his lab and the way he tries to deal with the situation are really some great scenes. The author has done a great research on the customs from that era, so the documentations is visible. The romance is built quite well also.

So yes, I am going with a 2.5 stars (round up 3 stars) for this one. I liked it, just that it could have been better. Let me know your thoughts below. Enjoy!

Four friends. Four college grads. Four people figuring out that life doesn’t always turn out the way you expected.

Brielle Reyes may not have post-college life planned out like some of her friends do, but she figures she’ll work for her mother’s home cleaning service while job hunting for something that makes use of her history and philosophy degrees. It’ll work out as long as she doesn’t fall in love. Her last relationship was a disaster and she has no idea where she’ll be in a few weeks, let alone the rest of her life. Since the only guy in her age range she sees now on a regular basis is cantankerous if handsome client Archer Ward, she probably won’t have a hard time sticking to that vow. Probably.

Archer Ward likes very few things: illustrating as a somewhat-celebrated comic artist and his privacy. When his meddling mother hires him a cleaning service on an almost daily basis because she doesn’t fully trust her son to live on his own with his disability, he’s at first annoyed – even if his house cleaner is the most beautiful woman he’s ever spent more than a few minutes with. When he realizes her dreams may take her far outside of his restricted orbit, he has to decide whether to stifle his interest in her or risk messing up her plans to explore if there’s something more between them.

Neither can deny they’re growing a little fond of each other, even if falling in love just now makes no sense whatsoever. But how often does love ever make perfect sense?

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at Virtue and Honor. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.
His gaze seemed to bore through her, all the way through her soul and to her deepest secrets. As if on cue, her back began to itch, the message that she had a miracle to perform and her iridescent purple wings longed for release. She ignored it; after all, he was dancing her way and all thought processes ceased to function.
Maybe Harper was right, maybe she needed to move on. Or at least find a distraction, like the itch on her back.
The itch graduated to a burn, and it became apparent her miracle was needed, and soon. She looked around, trying to figure out who was supposed to be the lucky recipient of grace that evening. Her extra sense of perception, another gift that came with her wings, failed her in the orgy of lights, loud music, alcohol, and dancing men.
A low click echoed in her ears. The people around her acted oblivious to the sound, but it rattled through her, setting every nerve in her body on fire. It was the sound of a cocking gun, and she swallowed hard. After three years of working miracles, her boss must have expected her to be desensitized to the sound, but she was not.
The sound of the trigger as it moved backward was enough to cause her heart to leap into her throat, followed by the explosion that came as a bullet exited the chamber. Each painful second moved in slow motion, the bullet slicing its way through the air, a path set straight for the sweaty chest of the guy who had smiled at her moments before.
Ignoring the eyes that might be on her, she wrapped herself in invisibility, and let out her wings as she jumped into the air. Drawing attention to herself by disappearing in front of them was a huge risk, but as the piece of metal tore through the air, she had no other choice. If she was chastised later for her actions, so be it. She wasn’t going to let a bullet take someone, not on her watch.
She made contact with him, slamming hard into his chest and wrapping her arms around him. A searing pain spread across her shoulder, and she bit her lip as hard as possible to keep herself from making a sound as they fell to the ground. The last thing she needed, in addition to everything else that night, was for him to know she was there.
Fluttering her wings, she tried to ease their descent to the floor, but her left wing remained still. Something was wrong—very wrong.

Audiobook Review: Anne of Green Gables

Author: L.M. Montgomery

Narrator: Colleen Winton

Length: 10 hours 7 minutes

Publisher: Post Hypnotic Press

Series: Anne of Green Gables, Book One

Genre: Classics

Anne, a young orphan from the fictional community of Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia (based upon the real community of New London), is sent to Prince Edward Island after a childhood spent in strangers’ homes and orphanages. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, siblings in their 50s and 60s, had decided to adopt a boy from the orphanage to help Matthew run their farm. They live at Green Gables, their Avonlea farmhouse on Prince Edward Island. Through a misunderstanding, the orphanage sends Anne Shirley. Anne is described as bright and quick, eager to please, talkative, and extremely imaginative. She has a pale face with freckles and usually braids her red hair. When asked her name, Anne tells Marilla to call her Cordelia, which Marilla refuses; Anne then insists that if she is to be called Anne, it must be spelled with an e, as that spelling is “so much more distinguished”. Marilla at first says the girl must return to the orphanage, but after a few days she decides to let her stay. Marilla feels that she could be a good influence on the girl and had also overheard that another disagreeable woman in town might take Anne in instead.

Lucy Maud Montgomery OBE (November 30, 1874 – April 24, 1942) was a Canadian author best known Anne of Green Gables and the series of novels that book begins. The “Anne” of the books is Anne Shirley, an orphaned girl who comes to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on their farm, Green Gables. Published in 1908, the book was an immediate success in Canada, the United States and beyond. It has been adapted multiple times to screen, stage, radio, and TV.

Anne Shirley made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. Anne of Green Gables was ranked number 41 in “The Big Read,” a survey of the British public by BBC to determine the “nation’s best-loved novel” (not children’s novel!). And a survey conducted by School Library Journal (USA) in 2012 ranked Anne of Green Gables number nine among all-time children’s novels.
Anne of Green Gables was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. Montgomery published 20 novels as well as 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays in her lifetime. Her work, diaries and letters have been read and studied by scholars and readers worldwide. Mostly set in Prince Edward Island and locations within Canada’s smallest province, the books made PEI a literary landmark and popular tourist site. Montgomery was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935.

Narrator Bio

Colleen is a Vancouver actor, singer, dancer, director and choreographer…and now a narrator. Her career has taken her all over the country and includes the Stratford, Shaw and Charlottetown Festivals, the original Canadian companies of CATS and Show Boat, extensive film/TV credits, and numerous directing/choreographing credits. Her stage work has been honoured with numerous nominations and a Jessie and Ovation award and she received a cultural award given by her local Chamber of Commerce. She was especially pleased to have recorded the works of L.M. Montgomery for Post Hypnotic Press just before she embarked on a production of the musical Anne of Green Gables at Theatre Calgary in which she plays Marilla Cuthbert.

If I were to choose a word to describe this book, it would most probably be innocence. “Anne of Green Gables” is a story about childhood, about growing up, receiving the proper education and appreciating small things in life. I was luckier to have listened to the audio version, narrated by Colleen Winton and it was much more of delight!

Anne Shirley is a character every child should know about. She brings forward the lovely act of living. Yes, she loves every little thing nature has to offer, form spring flowers to dark woods, always seeing the good in others, or better yet, she brings out the good! Her imagination has the power to create an entire universe, to lift her spirit and never let her feel lonely. As any child her age, she is not at all perfect. She has her own moments of misbehaving and as well her accidental mistakes, but always her heart remains pure! All her actions inspire the joy of living.

Her personality is as well as complex as her actions. We see a girl determined to make the two people that gave her a family proud (or at least satisfied). We see her wanting to be the best and the passion she inflicts on all she is doing is a big help for that. She is honest, does not take insults lightly and is a loyal friend. There are so many other things to say about Anne and her story, but I’ll keep some of them for my future articles.

The narration was fabulous! While I love Anne and everything she does, Colleen Winton gave her voice, gave her life! She did a fantastic job! I cried and laughed with every character throughout her voice acting and I lived all the emotions at maximum intensity. I can easily say this is the best narration of an audiobook I have ever listened.

Without further comments, I must say that “Anne of Green Gables” is a fantastic read that will for sure bring a spark of life and enthusiasm in your souls. This is a book that will for sure come in handy in difficult times. But while I loved the story, I do believe the audio version – especially this edition – is providing a richer experience. I will review part 2 and 3 of Anne’s story and I cannot wait to tell you more about her. Until next time, have a lovely reading time J

A lovestruck lady charms the duke of her dreams during an expedition on the high seas in this sexy, swashbuckling novel from USA Today bestselling author Bronwen Evans.
Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford, has a mission: sail to the Mediterranean and track down Lady Hestia Cary’s missing father. It is a straightforward task, but for two rather vexing complications. First, the sea holds painful memories; second, for her own safety, Hestia is to accompany him. As Alex battles the demons of his past, he must also resist Hestia’s surprisingly skillful attempts at seduction. After all, Alex has sworn to leave her untouched, and he intends to honor that vow—until he can properly ask the Earl’s blessing.
Ever since His Grace rescued Hestia from the arms of a Turkish pirate six long years ago, her heart has belonged to Alex. So when he agrees to help find her father, Hestia is thrilled. Although Alex tries to hide it, there’s passion in his eyes—and a frisson of desire in the air—whenever they meet. On board ship, miles from home, Alex won’t be able to deny her any longer. But with scoundrels lying in wait, she may not live to tell the tale of her conquest.
