excerpt

“How old are you?” Xavier asked, watching her.

“E-eighteen summers,” Leawyn stuttered, looking up at him nervously. She knew that he was much older than she, and the knowledge that she was expected to marry him made her stomach clench with sickness. But, Leawyn knew that some girls younger than herself were married to much older men. She told herself she should be somewhat grateful.

“We will be married in three days’ time.”

Leawyn’s body tensed in shock, the icy cold feeling of dread washing over her. “What?” She gaped at him. “We can’t!”

She couldn’t live with this man! This possessive, domineering man who didn’t care if he hurt her.

She shook her head. She wouldn’t marry Xavier. Not after meeting him.

“I won’t marry you,” Leawyn said suddenly, her brows creasing as she stared up at him in determination.

Xavier stiffened, every muscle in his body tensing as his eyes cut to hers. Leawyn swallowed against the urge to run as she edged away from him, catching the dangerous glint that entered his eyes. The glint was that of a predator that caught sight of its prey right before attacking.

She had a feeling that the prey was her.

“What did you say?” Xavier asked, his voice silky and dripping with promised danger.

Leawyn gulped, but then lifted her chin defiantly while staring at him with more bravery than she felt.

“I will not marry you,” she repeated, backing away from him as he took slow, measured steps towards her.

Xavier shook his head slowly, his icy eyes never leaving hers. “I’ll ask you one more time, Leawyn. What did you just say?”

“I refuse to marry—”

Xavier’s eyes flashed furiously, his hand shooting out and wrapping around the back of her neck in a vice-like grip. Using his other hand, he gripped her jaw brutally.

“You will become my wife, Leawyn,” he said in warning. He leaned in, rubbing his bearded cheek against her smooth one. “And if I find out you have let another man between your legs come our wedding night…” She could only emit a soft gasp of pain as Xavier’s grip around her neck squeezed tighter. “I’ll kill you,” he whispered softly into her ear.

Leawyn sucked in a sharp breath, and he laughed humorlessly as he drew back and looked into her frightened eyes.

How had her life come to this?

excerpt

Here we go again. He is on a rampage about how I look. I have yet to figure out the reason why he stays with me if I disgust him so much. I look in the mirror and see the same person I have always been: sandy blonde hair, blue eyes, high cheekbones, and just a few more curves than fifteen years ago. His cold, hard words are like daggers jabbed into my side. Not enough to kill, but just enough to leave massive scars.

As I make my way to my car for my first day on a new job, he follows behind me and yells, “I don’t know why you even bother putting makeup on. You look like a piece of lard no matter what you do.”

Holding back the tears, I get into the car and turn on some “Gunpowder and Lead” by Miranda Lambert before driving to Flagler Memorial Hospital for my first day as the Director’s assistant.

Happily ever after! What is that supposed to feel like? The thoughts pour through my head, questioning myself over and over. After being married to him for fourteen years you would think that all the hard times would be behind us and we would only feel love toward one another. Instead, I feel hate and sadness. Hate for this man who hurts me every day, breaking a piece of my soul little by little. Sadness for the person I used to be before I married him and lost my true self. How many more days will I be able to put up with the pain and stay? Will I ever get the strength to leave and find me again?

I have very energetic butterflies in my stomach, along with feeling less than perfect after Michael’s harsh words before I left this morning. I shake it off and plaster on a fake smile as I walk into the human resource office. The lady behind the desk has long platinum blonde hair and she is wearing a dark navy blue skirt and matching jacket with a white collared shirt opened about three buttons down. She looks like she should be on the cover of Vogue or maybe even Playboy. I am feeling less than acceptable in my black knee-length pencil skirt, white ruffled blouse, and red heels with my thick curves, none of which are a match for her slim body. I’m pretty sure hers are fake anyway; smiling to myself, I start feel a little better. I introduce myself as Laney Collins and let her know I am here to work as the assistant to Dr. Chance Turner.

book blurb

Alexis Hightower considers trust a four letter word, and she has no intention of getting serious with anyone. After all, her day job as a nurse is plenty serious enough. On one of her nights off, she attends a concert for her favorite band and ends up on stage. She never expected to meet the legendary singer in person or that he would be the one to make her question her way of life. But how do you learn to trust again when the one you want is desired by thousands?

Oliver Honeycutt has it all, success, fame, admirers, but when his family is faced with the unthinkable, none of it matters. Stranded in Atlanta, he meets Alexis who’s unlike any woman he’s known before. As his attraction grows, plans for the future change which leaves someone desperate to keep them apart. But Oliver won’t be easily discouraged. To have a future with Alexis he’ll do whatever it takes to make her see the man behind the image.

excerpt

Lexie’s scream mixed with the other fan’s and echoed throughout the room as Oliver sang the band’s first number one. As he moved from one side of the stage to the other, Lexie danced, arms over her head, as she let go. In the chaos of the noise, the heat of the bodies moving as one, and the music, she didn’t have to think or feel. She could just be.

A hand reached out for her and Simone hit her arm, mouth open in shock. Lexie blinked once and raised her eyes to meet those of Oliver. Up close, he was even better looking than in the magazines. Her heart stopped or maybe it leaped from her chest. She wasn’t sure. As if controlled by a stranger she reached for his hand and allowed him, with the help of two security guards, to pull her up onto the stage.

With her stomach in her throat, she stood awkwardly while Oliver sang to her. This wasn’t happening. It couldn’t be. Survival never pulled people up onto the stage. At least, they never had. But, there he was, positioned behind her, with his stomach pressed to her back. The heat of his skin and hers, melded together, so hot she feared their clothes would ignite.

Her eyes found Simone’s, who peeked out from behind her cell phone where she was recording what promised to be the best moment of Lexie’s life.

She dared a glance over her shoulder and feared she would faint when Oliver offered her a grin from behind the mike. Dear God he was hot. He pressed into her closer and placed a hand on her hip. Red, hot heat surged into her face. The move was definitely one she wouldn’t want her dad to see, but she was glad it was happening. As the song wound down, Oliver moved to stand beside her. Over his shoulder she saw his brother, Bailey, wailing on his blue Fender. The entire experience was surreal. His brother looked up and smiled, but something was wrong with his face.

She narrowed her eyes to get a better look, sure the lights were playing tricks on her. At the same time, he swiped a hand over his face and when he pulled it away, blood was smeared across his upper lip. He went back to playing, but his nose continued to bleed.

Her gaze refocused on Oliver. “Your brother,” she tried to explain over the music.

When he didn’t register what she was trying to say, she pointed.

Oliver’s head whipped around. For a brief moment, his eyes widened and then, as quickly as she’d seen it, the look was gone. Oliver finished the song and led her back to the edge of the stage where she was lowered back into the crowd. When she looked up, he met her gaze. The moment was brief, but she felt it. A moment of recognition between them. One that said he was sad it had to end. She wanted to reach for him, but she couldn’t. Instead, she stood frozen as fans around her pushed in and slapped her on the back. Oliver waved to his admirers and rushed off toward his brother.

book blurb

In a world where Fae and Vampire will forever be at odds, a Vampire wins the crown, ruling the Fae Realm for the first time in history.

An Incubus, Leolin Kyffin, and his barren Succubus, Louise Bach, plot to end King Zachariah Orsova’s life, allowing them to rule the Fae Realm.

Through Louise’s encouragement, Leolin walks into a female Vampire’s dream and mates with her, breaking Zachariah’s law. His hope is to create what he thinks will be the most powerful half-breed known to the Realm.

When Zachariah kills the Succubus, Leolin vows revenge, sacrificing his half-breed son, Monty Saxon, and using him as a pawn to tear out the King’s heart, hoping to make him feel the pain of death while living.

When Leolin walks into Zachariah’s dreams, he fills his mind with unimaginable thoughts and desires. Doing the same to Monty, he secures his devious plot, patiently waiting for the precise moment Zachariah and Monty will be brought together as one.

The choices Leolin makes all add up to delivering a fate worse than death to his half-breed son and the King of the Fae Realm. Will Leolin avenge the murder of Louise? Will Zachariah and Monty survive, or will they be left suffering in the end?

excerpt

“Allow me to do the questioning, Håkon,” Zachariah said as they walked into the Saxon Inn.

“Aye, my King,” he muttered, annoyance lacing his tone.

Zachariah turned and glared at him. “Need I remind you with whom you are speaking?”

“No, Sire.”

“Very well then.” Zachariah turned and headed straight for the bar. “Two ales, please,” he said to the barkeep.

“On the house for the King and my dear old friend,” Ivar said, smiling.

Håkon stared at him for a moment before he let out a tight smile, going back to his standard hard glare a moment later. Ivar poured two ales and set the mugs in front of them.

“How can I help you gentlemales this evening?”

Zachariah took a sip and sighed. “Very well. I’ve heard some strange whispers about the other evening’s…events.”

“Events?” Ivar questioned.

“I heard about the possibility of a murder or two here. You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?”

“No, my King. I just work the bar.” Ivar smiled, his nerves making his bottom lip twitch.

“It would be wise to be truthful while addressing your King,” Zachariah said, lifting the mug to his lips once more.

“If you know something, Ivar, tell him,” Håkon said. “It will be much easier on all of us.”

Ivar leaned too close for the Viking’s comfort, forcing him to place his arm between the male and the King.

“Aye,” the King said. “Allow the male some space.” Håkon glanced at Zachariah, then sat on the stool next to him and picked up the mug of ale, taking a long pull.

“It was two Fae. Somehow, they came in undetected. When Rhun figured out what was going on, they threatened him with a knife. I assure you, it was only self-defense.”

Zachariah glanced at his guardsmale, then picked up his mug and took another sip. “Very interesting.”

“That is the Gods’ honest truth, my King.”

“Ivar! We need another barrel…” Rhun stopped as he rounded the back corner of the bar. “My King,” he said, bowing his head.

“Rhun Saxon. How are you this fine evening?”

“I’m well, my King. What brings you in? I have no females available for feeding. All have been used already.”

“I’m not interested in feeding. I thought I would come in and have a mug of ale while Baldric fits my new friend for some clothing. Seems someone left him naked, bloodied, and beaten in the back alley between your establishment and my tailor’s. Does any of this ring a bell?”

A snarl lifted Rhun’s upper lip. Before his fangs descended, Håkon reached out and grabbed him by the shirt collar. “Don’t even think about it. If you lower those short little pricks of yours, I will pluck them out. Have I made myself clear?”

“Calm down, Viking. Let the male go.”

“Aye, Sire,” he growled in the innkeeper’s face before stepping away.

“Now, tell me, why would you do such a thing to your son, Rhun?”

Rhun spit on the floor. “He is not my lad.”

“No?” Zachariah asked, playing ignorant.

“My wife lay with another male. A Fae.” He spit again. “I hope she burns in the pits of the Realm for her trespasses.”

“Oh? Is Carlyn around? I could question her for you. I’m sure she would be honest with her King.”

Zachariah probed Rhun’s mind and, with ease, maneuvered his way in. Unnoticed, he sifted through his memories until he came to Carlyn’s body seizing under a silver stake pushed into her heart. His hand ached from the burn of the silver. He then probed between the dark corners and down the black corridors, seeing a large, blurry-faced male fucking Monty, a female positioned below, enjoying his cock. A knife dripped with blood before it was plunged into the neck of another blurry-faced male. A Fae. Zachariah pulled back from his mind.

“She had a tragic accident on her horse. It bucked her off, breaking her neck. I always told her that stallion was no good for riding, but you know how females are. She thought she could tame the beast.”

Zachariah chuckled. “Those females. Such naughty creatures.”

“That’s right. Monty is now unclaimed as my heir.”

“So now that Monty’s mother has passed and you have unclaimed him as your son, are you telling me he is my responsibility? The King of the Realm is now responsible for a lad raised by another male who, as I can see with my own eyes, still walks the Human Realm? You left him broken in the alley with no food, shelter, or clothing on his back. As the King, it has now been placed on my shoulders to care for a lad who was raised to know nothing more than stables, cleaning chamber pots, sweeping floors, and fucking?”

“He is not a Saxon. I said I no longer claim him.”

“Mind your tone. You are speaking with your King,” Håkon reminded Rhun.

“Thank you, Viking. He shall mind his tone now, or he will be licking the shit off my boots.” Zachariah smiled, then asked, “Do you know what type of Fae she lay with?”

“No,” Rhun whispered.

Håkon cupped his ear. “What was that? No…?”

“No, my King. I do not know what type of Fae Carlyn lay with,” Rhun grumbled. Håkon smirked when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Ivar trying to stifle a chuckle.

“I see.” Zachariah threw back the last of the ale in the mug and slammed it down on the bar. He stood, forcing everyone to look at him. “You didn’t take a moment to ask before driving a stake through her heart? What a sight that must have been for you. Does your hand still hurt from the silver burn? Maybe you should’ve asked the Vampire and two Fae you slaughtered in one of this fine establishment’s rooms upstairs.” His gaze flickered to Ivar, whose eyes had widened. “Ivar, this is your last chance to tell me the truth. If you lie again, you will be bowing headless.”

“I didn’t see what happened, my King. All I know is he asked me to help clean up the mess. I know nothing about his wife and son.”

Zachariah refocused on Rhun. “Come before me and kneel.”

Book Review: Untangling The Stars

Untangling the Stars by Alyse MillerUntanglingtheStars.v4

Just as the title says, this book is about trying to make it in a world of movie stars, trying to balance normality with the life in the full spectrum of media. Andie and Guy decide to start a relationship that is destined to become the center of attention. Starting with enthusiasm and courage, Andie will understand that her love for Guy may not be enough. On the other hand, he will face changes and career decisions that may or may not be in accordance with his wishes.

Both characters are well developed and the writing style is easy to follow. I would have wanted a little more dialogue in the beginning, but I can get over it. As well I would have wanted to find out more about their future in the end.

UTSTeaser1.v2-1024x614-1024x614

I liked how the inner conflict of the characters was present and how their feelings were transmitted to the reader. Something else that caught my attention was the mix between music, TV shows and books. I loved the insight into vampire characters and I appreciated the author’s thoughts on The Twilight Series. The link between the book title and its content also caught my attention. I mentioned this in other reviews  – I like to know or better to feel that the title is linked with the story.

So congratulations for a great story! I do recommend you give it a try, it’s a great way to pass the time. Now… Back to my other books …

book blurb

She went to jail for the right reason but the wrong murder…

With her mom in the hospital from a recent attack, Kyara has to wonder if her grandmother’s recent release from jail isn’t behind it. Pulled from her quiet, content life, Kyara finds herself on a mission, not only to find out who put her mom in a coma but who just might have a lifetime of secrets to hide.

Snooping into what’s going on, seems harmless until Kyara meets Ryan, and discovers who he really is. Unknowingly, they have stirred up a long forgotten past, one that some will go to any lengths to keep hidden.

Secrets spanning thirty years may never come to light unless they can solve the deadly secret, now buried beneath the golf course and stay ahead of those trying to kill them.

How many more people will die before the lies are unraveled and those who are guilty, decide that killing an entire town, isn’t too far to go to hide their dirty past?

excerpt

When she felt a little more settled she headed back in and almost kept walking right out the front door. She’d only been home two days and already she wanted to run. Getty’s voice though stopped her cold –‘only sissies run, girl’. That had been another one of her grandmother’s favorite sayings, one that Kyara wished she could forget. Stiffening her spine, she turned and headed into the kitchen, the destruction of what she’d done, shocked her. It looked like someone was demolishing the place. She knew she couldn’t stop to think about what she was doing, instead she grabbed her pail, filled it with fresh water and set to scrubbing, behind the fridge. The floor and wall was so caked with grease and dirt, it was like a gummy glue. It felt more like she was smearing than actually making any progress. After the fifth pail of water, she could finally see the yellow and green wallpaper.Someone had drawn or written all over it. Assuming it had been her handiwork as a child, she didn’t bother to really look at, she just moved the fridge back in place.

She moved from the kitchen to the dining room but the china cabinet with all of her grandmother’s dishes, stopped her. She’d never dream of throwing those out, no matter what. Knowing that she wasn’t being fair to her mom and was partly to blame for the sad state of the place, she stepped back and turned. The door to the pantry stood open, almost like it was framing or pointing her in the direction of her mom’s blood, a congealed dark mass that made almost a perfect oval puddle. It wasn’t huge but it carried a punch. She gasped. It didn’t seem real. The truth of what it meant hit her like someone had placed their hand inside her chest and squeezed her heart.

Who would do this to Mom?

Not wanting to go near it but unable to stop her feet from taking her there, she stared down at it. A fleeting thought went through her mind, how do I get blood stains out? As she looked at the spot she was thrown back in time. She was climbing the tree in the backyard, even though she’d been told many times not to. But the one time, she’d scared a Robin, who had been nesting high up in it. The bird had dived at her. Kyara had freaked, jerking sideways, falling off the branch she’d been perched on. She hadn’t broken anything, the branches had slowed her fall but they had also provided her with her first piercings and many scrapes, burns and cuts. Her mom had to have heard her cry and had arrived to scoop her up, almost the minute she’d hit the ground and carry her inside to the bathroom. She’d carefully stripped Kyara’s clothes and cleaned and bathed all of her injuries.

Kyara cocked her head wondering why she’d had that memory. The only thing that came to mind was that her mom hadn’t hesitated, she’d done what had needed to be done.

book blurb

FBI profiler Jeff Crandall returned to Fiddler, Idaho, to work on new Bureau protocols in peace…and because he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Abby Quinn. Kind, beautiful and quietly sexy, the petite rancher next door is loved by the entire town but keeps fiercely to herself. She’s a mystery that doesn’t want to be solved, though he’s desperate to try.

Whether that interest is professional or personal is a question he’ll sort out later.

Abby knows sharing her secrets would bring death and destruction to Fiddler. She survived her childhood, barely, but a long list of stepfathers weren’t nearly so lucky: their bodies are buried across the country, waiting to be discovered. The best protection is silence, anonymity and isolation, though the handsome agent next door seems hell-bent on destroying all three.

And he just keeps kissing her…

When Jeff is called in to investigate an interstate serial killer case spanning two decades, Abby knows it’s only a matter of time before he connects the dots, sees her for who she really is and walks away. But it’s when he’s standing in the crosshairs of Abby’s past that Jeff faces his biggest challenge yet: how to give the woman he loves the life she doesn’t believe she deserves.

My Review:

I was telling you in another review that some books deserve more than just 5 stars. This is an additional title that would fit just perfectly in such a category. It has the attributes needed: great story, great characters and a great writing style.

First thing I’d like to mention is how great the author expressed the characters’ emotions and especially Abby’s trauma. How she spoke to her animal friends in an easy way as she felt safe, how she was scared to talk to any humans, but when she finds a reason to put her life in order, her efforts are well expressed and her struggles are well depicted. There are many great things about the story, but I think the writing style tops them all.

Now, to get back to our story. Abby is running away from a past she wants to keep buried. Still, her mother’s sins follow her and even if she tries to do the right things, she lives in fear that they will catch up. FBI Profiler Jeff Crandall is intrigued at first by his mysterious neighbor and while trying to uncover her secrets he finds himself att5racted to her innocence. They will understand that what stands between them, will also bring them close.

Both characters are built with utmost care and there are no random facts about them. I like how Jeff is attached to his work and I like how Abby always tries to save lives and somehow help the souls in need. Her relationship with the young kid (read the book and find out!) is also very interesting!

I could go on and on about what I like about this book, but I’d have to tell you the story in more detail. Read the book, you won’t regret it!

excerpt

Body Found In Well.

The Lewisville Clarion headline was brief, and the story wasn’t much longer. Beau Archer’s remains had been found in an old well on his property in Virginia. The man had gone missing twenty-eight years ago and, without family to keep it open, the investigation had gone cold.

Abby Quinn read the story three times, scrolling through the online version of the small-town paper in the hopes of finding more information. When she didn’t, she wavered between relief and regret.

Beau Archer, her first stepfather, had stumbled into her life when he’d married her mother in Atlantic City. He’d taught Abby to ride a bike. She could still hear his boots pounding on the hard-packed dirt of the country road in front of his house, his heavy breath in her ear. He’d whooped with laughter when she’d turned at the end of the lane and made her wobbly way back to him. Then he’d taken her for ice cream.

A month after that memorable bike ride, his loving wife Wallis had shoved his lifeless body down a well.

He deserved more than one paragraph in the newspaper, but at least now he’d get a headstone.

Toby—her third Toby in almost twenty years—whined through the screen door, reminding her of the time. She deleted the alert email, cleaned out her trash folder and cleared her browser history. It was time to get to work.

Walking out onto her front porch, Abby let the door slap closed behind her as she stood and enjoyed the brisk Idaho spring morning. Past the security light illuminating the yard, the still-early lavender sky met the dark hills on the horizon.

Stretching her muscles, she winced as pain lanced from her neck down her left side. Most days she could ignore it, but she’d pushed too hard yesterday. She’d felt the muscles cramp as she’d fixed fences and then stayed at the computer, perched in her chair squinting at code until late in the evening.

And then the nightmares, and the news about Beau.

Already halfway to the stables, Toby looked over his shoulder to see if she was following. Abby swore the border collie was smiling. She could always count on her dog.

“Work. Yeah, I know,” she grumbled good-naturedly as she tramped down the steps and toward the paddock. At the outer edge of the light, she faced the darkness beyond and hesitated.

Nineteen years, sixty-nine hundred mornings, and she still gritted her teeth and held her breath when she stepped into the shadows. But she did it.

She did it again when she swung the stable doors open. Reaching around the wall, she turned on the lights before she stepped inside.

On either side of the aisle, her horses poked their heads over the stall doors, blinking under the bright lights, chuffing and huffing hellos.

“Good morning, George,” Abby whispered as she put a calming hand on the palomino’s velvety nose. “I told you I’d be back this morning.” After a year of working to earn the animal’s trust, it was rewarding to look into eyes no longer hazy with disappointment. Still, the minute the gate opened, George trotted into the misty dawn, as though afraid someone would slam the door and trap her inside.

The other horse remained quiet in his stall. “Good morning, Hemingway,” Abby whispered as she stroked the giant black gelding’s nose and danced her fingers through his forelock. He was becoming such an elegant animal. “How are you, handsome? Ready to work this morning?” He dropped his head to her waiting hand. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

She forced her left arm up, ignoring the persistent pain, slipped the halter over his head and scratched his ears until he quieted. “No saddle today, I promise. Let’s get used to this first.” She opened the door but let the lead rope dangle as she walked away and let him follow. He needed to know she wouldn’t tug and pull. His clopping tread reminded her of Beau and her wobbly bike ride.

Shaking the memory free, she stood in the stable doorway. The pasture was cloaked in fog, and dew silvered the grasses not already trampled. It was like looking through a soft-focus lens. In this moment, right before sunrise, the world was fuzzy, tinted green, blue and gray. The birds chirped quiet, sleepy greetings. Hemingway froze when she picked up the rope.

“I won’t hurt you.” Abby took one step, keeping the lead slack, and waited. When the animal moved forward, she took another step. They inched through the paddock and the gate to the edge of the field.

“Good boy,” she murmured as she offered him a carrot and stroked his graceful neck. “See? No pain.”

Leaving him there, she went back into the stable only to run out when an equine scream ended in canine yelps and snarls. All that remained of Hemingway were his thundering hoof beats and the waving grass.

Abby knelt next to Toby and ran her hands over him, checking him for injuries. The dog’s shame gave way to a plea for a belly rub.

“I know you want to herd him,” she scolded as she gave in and scratched his chest, “but he hates to be crowded right now.” She stood and sighed. “Let’s go get him.”

Hem’s trail was marked in the dew, and easy to follow. The tall grass swallowed Toby in a gulp, and Abby waded through the swaying fescue to the river, her bag of carrots and apples bouncing against her hip. Stepping carefully on the slick rocks, she hopped to the Simons’ pasture and continued up the hill.

Off to her left, a covey of quail clattered clumsily into the sky, scaring her as much as she’d startled them. Toby shot off, intent on catching the slowest prey. Abby trudged on alone.

The giant gelding was stopped at the fence, munching on Deb Simon’s newly budded shrubs. He watched her approach with one dark, wild eye.

“Shh.” She touched his neck and pursued him when he flinched away. When he quieted, she rubbed his sweaty coat and stared down at the ragged plant. “I hope you haven’t killed that. I’ll never find a replacement.” At least the Simons were gone for the summer. It would be enough time to determine the damage and do some shopping, if necessary.

Comforting pats grew to long strokes as Abby ran her hands over the horse’s shoulder and then down his back. When she reached his ribs he stepped away and tossed his head. She kept a steady grip on the lead rope. “Quiet. I need to see if you’ve reinjured yourself. It won’t hurt. I promise.” She hoped she was right.

She got farther the second time. “Good boy, Hem.” He moved away again, and she started over.

It took four tries before she could run a light hand over his bones and feel the spots that were once jagged pieces. The horse shook beneath her, but he stayed still. “Good boy. I know it’s scary to trust someone, but you’re a brave man.” She pulled an apple from her bag. “You’re going to be good as new.”

The horse ignored the treat and stared over her shoulder, his nostrils flaring at a new scent. They weren’t alone.

Abby’s skin tingled as her muscles tightened. If she faced the intruder, she risked chasing Hem again. She tensed and moved her weight to the balls of her feet and whistled for backup. Toby came at a run. The dog was too well trained to bark, but his eyes stayed glued on their observer. Abby kept her focus on her dog.

Instead of growling, he wagged his tail. He’d seen whoever it was before. Convinced it was safe, Abby turned to face their audience.

“Hi, Abby.”

Jeff Crandall stood on the Simons’ porch, barefooted, in a wrinkled T-shirt and faded jeans. Lounging against a newel post, he was sipping a cup of steaming coffee, holding it with one hand while the other was shoved into the front pocket of his jeans.
