2017 in Reverse

2017inreverse_banner

Here we are, in our last day of 2017. Another year has passed, with good, bad, amazing or terrifying moments. For me, it has been such an eventful year! I was in my lowest points and came back happier than ever. I was unorganized, but somehow managed to clean up my act. What started to be a year of conflict and confusion, ended up being a healing process, full of accomplishments.

When it comes to books and book blogging, I have experienced my worst reading slump ever! But at the end of it, I realized how much all this reviewing means to me and how much it changed me, not only as a reader, but as a person. I started with a goal of reading 70 books this year and ended up reading over 90, not all have been reviewed officially yet. I had books I’ve rated 2 stars, or even books I’ve DNFed. I’ve discovered Book Depository, become a BookTube addict and even started an Instagram account J I’ve taken some major steps as a book blogger.

Probably the best things that happened were receiving my first paperback copies of books to read and review. And those were some amazing books! But let’s not forget my first Illumicrate box (pictures are on my Instagram account). I was like a kid in Candy Land when I saw it.

I’ve grown up as a blogger. I’ve finally found a system I am comfortable with and also managed to track all my ARCs – of course, with Goodreads’ help. I now have shelves with my TBRs from 2016, 2017 and I even have my shelf with books I need to read in 2018. Yes, I have so many books I haven’t gotten to. But I will, I am slowly but surely reading all books I have outstanding.

Last but not least, I need to thank all those amazing people that have shaped me this year. Starting with all the authors that have put their trust in my reviews, my new bookish friends and mainly my special someone, who’s always there to encourage my crazy ideas or discourage the silly ones.

I wish you all a 2018 with many, many achievements, with fewer disappointments and great books! Life is the best gift we could have received, so we must make the most out of it. Beauty surrounds us in every little thing, in every insignificant detail on the cover of a book. We just need to open our eyes and see it.

Happy New Year to all!

Love,

Lilly_2

Goodreads Choice Awards 2016

Even if my TBR list is getting bigger day by day, I still try to stay up to date with what my choiceawards2016fellow bloggers are writing or with what is trending on Goodreads or other book sites J

So I took a look on the Choice Awards for 2016, held by Goodreads as usual. I was extremely happy to see that for the Romance section the winner is one of my favorite authors: Colleen Hoover with her book “It Ends with Us”. I love her work, I adore her characters even though I must admit I don’t own all her books (yet). Not all are available in paperback in my country, so I’ve started looking online to order them. Anyways, back to THE WINNERS.

For the Romance area, “It Ends with Us” has managed to gather 59,546 votes and it’s the story of a young woman who falls in love with a good guy but she actually still loves her ex. Check the synopsis  here. The book is quite amazing, as usual when it comes to Colleen Hoover! Second place is Robert Their’s “Storm and Silence” – book one of the Storm and Silence series. I haven’t read this one, but its action is based in 19th century London, so it’s right up my alley (new book on my TBR – yey!) – Check out more about it here. Third place is Nora Roberts with “the Obsession”. I love Nora Roberts just as much as Colleen Hoover. Both these authors have determined this blog’s creation, even though I haven’t posted any reviews for their stories – I feel I’m not yet ready to emit an opinion on them, as I simply like them too much!

Note to self: write an article on how I discovered their books.

Some other winners:

  • Best Fantasy: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Parts One and Two”, 128,543 votes. I was expecting that actually. Even if I am not a big fan of Harry Potter, the series is fabulous indeed.
  • Best YA Fiction: “Salt to the Sea” by Ruta Sepetys with 29,122 votes. Jennifer L. Armentrout came second with her novel “The Problem with Forever”.
  • Best YA Fantasy & Science Fiction: “A Court of Mist and Fury” by Sarah J. Maas. She also owns third place with her book “Empire of Storms”. I did not have the chance to read her books yet, but this year she’s been getting a lot of promotion and many bloggers have spoken really nice of her books. I’ll definitely give them a try! There are so many great authors in this category, I don’t even know which one to mention…
  • Best Debut Goodreads Author: “Rebel of the Sands” by Alwyn Hamilton, with 24,445 votes. Published in March 2016, it has over 3,000 reviews and a score of 3.9 stars. Books 2 and 3 are expected this year and in 2018.

There are a lot of amazing authors nominated – check all results on Goodreads here. I will definitely be more involved in this year’s awards; this means an even bigger TBR. Anyways, congratulations to all winners and authors nominated and THANK YOU for these great books that keep us up most nights!

Mira’s mother sizes up bodies at the morgue like she’s rifling through the sales rack: this one’s too big… this one’s too small… ah, here it is. Just right. The perfect vessel for the one they’ll call Adam.

Since Adam’s survival is the key to drawing out the Conduit—a slippery sort bent on evacuating souls from their human bodies—Mira must help him pass for a typical teenage boy. That means showing him how to talk right, walk right, chew with his mouth open… blend in.

Ironic, because blending in is has always been a challenge for Mira, especially with hair the color of a Dorito. But at their small, secluded prep school, blending in is a matter of life and death.

Because the Conduit is watching.

Summer of Irreverence – The Rock StarSummerofIrreverenceTheRockStar_w10818_750
by Cathrine Goldstein

Genre: Adult Romance

Release Date: July 6th 2016

The Wild Rose Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Straight-laced, veterinary surgeon, Summer Wynters is ready to break the rules. And who better to break them with than the most irreverent of all men, mega rock star Malcolm Angel? With one last summer free from work obligations, Summer moves to New York City, and at the coaxing of her friend, pretends to be a model so she can spend one wild night with Malcolm.

Rock star, Malcolm Angel, tortured by a dark past, may be the poet laureate of romance, but he, like science-minded Summer, has never believed in romantic love. How could he? With his history, he doesn’t deserve to be loved.

When Summer’s honesty, kindness, and exuberance for life changes his perspective, the two discover they are in deeper than either dreamed possible. But when Malcolm discovers Summer’s been perpetuating a lie, will he forgive her? Even if forgiveness is possible, can a man immune to love teach someone else to believe in it?

My Review:

Summer of Irreverence is a very sweet read. I loved every page and I loved the characters and their story.  It’s the kind of book that offers distraction and a good time J

Summer is looking for some time for herself before starting her career, before acting like a responsible person.  She did not have in mind any romantic implication on the long term when meeting Malcolm Angel – a rock star with a bad reputation. As any love story, he has a secret of his own. Can a relationship that started based on a lie overcome the differences between the two? Can Malcolm fully trust Summer? Or is she able to understand his past?  You’ll see…

I can say overall that the story was quite ok, maybe a little rushed when Malcolm’s issues were set on the table and probably the characters could have been a little more defined. Other than that, I can’t find anything that I did not like. It’s good we have both sides of the story, even if Malcolm’s thought are not as predominant as summer’s. This goes well with his character and his mysterious angle.

So enjoy the book, it’s quite a nice way to spend some free time. Hope you like it and come back and share your experience !

About the Book

Portrait of a man with naked torso and tattooes. Dark and deep shadows.Title: Make It Rain

Author: Sasha Marshall

Genre: Rock Star Romance

Kip

When you rip the Guitar Goddess’s world apart, and your own, how in the f@*k are you supposed to find redemption? She’s my world, and I’ve shattered her. What began as an absence for us to both heal, ends in the dissolution of our relationship, and my breaking heart. I committed the most unforgivable transgression, but maybe not everything is as it seems.

One more tragedy, one more f@*king tragedy may be the only way back into her heart. I have one more chance to explain what really happened, and hope she believes me. I’ll embrace this time to show her I’m still the man she fell in love with, and to win her back, but how in the hell am I supposed to do that when she’s holding me at arm’s length?

Our pain, all of our pain, began with Caleb’s death. Maybe I’m still paying the price for him leaving her, because for a short time, I left her too. All I can do is pray to him and whatever is out there, that we’ll be brought back together. I can only hope that she’ll sleep beside me once again, smile for only me, and love me the way she used to. I can only long for her to make me whole again, and stop this ache in my chest.

Henley

He was the only one who had never betrayed me, until he did. He never lied to me, until he did. He was always by my side, until he wasn’t. The one person who has always been my constant, best friend, and then lover left me. They all leave me, though. They all lie to me. They all betray me at some point. Then, he showed up with his gorgeous green eyes, tattoos, and undercut, and I have a hard time staying away, but I also can’t seem to look him in the eye anymore. I can’t give him anymore of my heart, because that precious little organ barely survived him the first time.

Maybe we should’ve never crossed the line from friends to lovers. If we hadn’t, I’d still have him by my side. I we’d never danced the way we did, he’d still be my best friend. I don’t know how he’s supposed to fit into my life anymore. He’s always made my life brighter, happier, and carefree. How do you learn to live without that? I thought I knew everything about him, but now I question everything.

They say home is where the heart is, but if that’s true, then I’m lost because I have no clue where my heart is, anymore. I thought I knew—until I met Maximillian.

I was on my way out of the Capital City before the local vampires could catch on to me and let’s just say if that happened then this club dancer would be facing her expiration date. And that’s when the famous DJ blew into town—and into my head and heart. He turned all my plans upside down with his sick friend and his electric blue eyes, damn it.

I should have cut bait and run for my life, but I couldn’t abandon someone I could heal—even if it meant the vampires might catch up with me. Besides, Maximillian smelled familiar, like deep forest and pine needles baked in the sun mixed with that chilly snap of running water and the coolness of twilight. Those things have a smell that adds up to a dream.

You can get lost in that kind of dream. It can fill your mind with ideas and notions you have no business thinking or feeling. Dreams like that make it easy to forget the danger you’re in.

Author Bio:

Lyla Bardan wrote her first romance in fifth grade and was horrified when her male teacher read it aloud in class. She wrote her second romance in the seventh grade after seeing two great horned owls engage in a rather fascinating courtship dance. As the male hooted, danced, and bobbed for the female, Lyla knew there was a story to be told. This discovery of passion in the animal world led to a lifelong interest in science, other worldly creatures, and their love stories.

While in college, Lyla joined a sci-fi/fantasy acting group, where she and others made puppets and produced plays for fellow students. Her favorite part was not creating the overly detailed and ornate puppets of fairies, demons, and dragons, but writing romance bits into every script.

It wasn’t until years into an unfulfilling scientific research career that Lyla came back to her roots of writing. Reaching into her dreams and fantasies, she left the research behind and now stays busy writing from the comfort of her home office, overlooking her well-maintained fairy garden, fruit bearing trees, and a number of birdhouses. There she can relax and remember that it was two birds that originally sparked her interest in love stories just begging to be told.

Note: Bits of this fascinating biography (written by Lyla’s daughter) are actually true!
