About the Bookfool-me-twice-philippa-jane-keyworth

Title: Fool Me Twice

Author: Philippa Jane Keyworth

Genre: Historical Romance

In the gaming hells of eighteenth century London, orphan Caro Worth is leading a double life. By day she plays a proper gentlewoman on the lookout for a wealthy husband. By night she plays the infamous Angelica, her fictional half-sister with a talent for cards and an ability to finance the life her respectable self has built. An introduction to a rich Marquis brings marriage and security within Caro’s grasp…until the arrival of the unpredictable and totally ineligible Mr. Tobias Felton.

Dismayed by Felton’s persistent appearances, shocking frankness, and enigmatic green eyes, Caro watches helplessly as he comes closer than anyone to guessing her secret, but when complete and utter ruin threatens, she finds that Felton’s suspicions just might become her salvation. As the walls she has built to protect herself crumble down around her, Caro learns that no matter how careful your plans, life and love have a habit of falling quite spectacularly out of control!

Book Excerpt:

“I wish to watch you play,” Felton said, leaning closer. “I hear you are quite the gamester. You fleeced my friend Mr. Leeden of two thousand pounds just three weeks ago.”

“Did I? How clever of me.” She laughed softly and played another card.

“You know I met your sister.”

This cavalier statement brought her up short. She tried not to react, but Felton saw her hand stop toying with her stomacher to grip her cards more tightly. Distracting the players was no longer a priority—distracting herself was the new objective.

“Did you?” This was how she could maintain control. Asking questions, remaining calm and disconnected.

“You are very different from your sister, you know.” A little smile tugged at his lips. “Such exquisite raven hair—like an Italian beauty.”

“Half-sister.”

“I say! Come on, Miss Worth, you are hardly in this game.” Lord Avers reproached her while laying the winning card upon the table.

Roused from paralysis, Angelica saw that she had just lost five hundred pounds. Exhaling sharply, she discarded the rest of her cards onto the table in a series of flutters.

She could feel Felton watching her. She hoped that he had missed that initial expression of fear. Five hundred pounds! Still, all could be well if she could regain her garments of self-possession.

“Unfortunate.” Mr. Felton clicked his tongue against his teeth. What was wrong with this man? If she believed in bad luck, she would say that he was it, lingering like the smell of the Thames on an unpromising morning. She held back a huff of irritation.

“I am not a bird in a cage—stop staring,” she commanded. There were times she was thankful not to be the proper Caro Worth, and this was one of them. Let her emotions be seen if he was so intent on looking.

“So another commanded me.” A lilting grin appeared on his lips. “And I would call it a gilded cage,” he added provokingly.

“What?” Her eyes darted towards him in anger. “I am no kept woman.” Her words snapped like twigs cracking under foot.

“That was not what I meant, but thank you for clarifying.”

She looked away, ignoring the embarrassment. This man was infuriating. He led her into one ill-spoken, impassioned speech after another, whichever of her two roles she was playing.

Originally trained as a horse-riding instructor, Philippa went on to become a copywriter before beginning a degree in History. A born again Christian, Philippa lives in the south of England with her handsome husband.

Philippa has always written stories and believes that, since it is one of her loves and passions, she always will. In her early writing career, she dabbled in a variety of genres, but it was the encouragement of a friend to watch a film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice that began her love affair with the British Regency. Since then, she has watched every Regency film and TV series she could get her hands on and become well acquainted with Georgette Heyer’s novels which gave her the inspiration to write her own.

Both as a reader and a writer, Philippa believes it is important to escape into a world you yourself would want to live in. This is why she writes stories that will draw you into the characters’ joys and heartaches in a world apart from our own. Her debut novel, The Widow’s Redeemer (Madison Street Publishing, 2012), is a traditional Regency romance bringing to life the romance between a young widow with an indomitable spirit and a wealthy viscount with an unsavory reputation. The novel has been received well by readers and reviewers who have praised the heartfelt story and admirable characters. Her second novel, The Unexpected Earl (Madison Street Publishing, 2014), explores another romance in the Regency era when an impetuous young woman has her life turned upside down by the reappearance of the earl who jilted her six years ago. Her third novel, Fool Me Twice (Madison Street Publishing, 2016), is a Georgian romance that has just been released.

So, what are you waiting for? Get swept away into another time with characters you will learn to love, and experience Britain in the 18th century and Regency like never before.

Book Excerpt

The Metropolitan Times

June 24, 196…

At nine o’clock yesterday morning, following ninety days of fruitless searching, billionaire industrialist and businessman Lyndon Surway was officially pronounced dead. Mr. Surway was last seen by members of his staff departing from the main airplane hangar of his estate a few minutes past eight in the morning, flying alone aboard one of his aircraft. His last recorded words to the command center crew of his hangar were: “Clear skies and mild winds. Perfect visibility, or as perfect as I could hope, for as long as I can tell. Gentlemen, I wish you a thorough enjoyment of this fine day.” Nothing unusual was noted in his language or behavior.

The late Mr. Surway often took his plane out with no stated destination. But this time, he failed to return at the customary hour of six in the evening. As no word had been received from him, the kitchens were advised that he would likely dine outside. At ten o’clock on the following morning, when there was still no news of Mr. Surway or his aircraft, the Steward of the House alerted the municipal, state, and federal authorities, and a search began for the missing magnate. But no airport, hotel, hospital or inn within fuel’s range of the estate could provide any information. Dozens of interviews bore no result. Countless journalists and detectives rushed in from every corner of the country, but none of them could unearth a single clue regarding Mr. Surway’s whereabouts. Not even the Steward could guess where Mr. Surway had gone. On the morning of his disappearance, Mr. Surway had only told him: “My day is free and so am I.”

Fifteen infantry troops were dispatched, with over a hundred hound dogs, across more than two hundred miles of hills and valleys surrounding the town of Spring Forge, where Mr. Surway lived. The infantry and the dogs found nothing. The Air Force then loaned eighteen jet-powered aircraft to continue the search. The Navy joined the effort with five ships, sixteen helicopters, and four submarines to scour the coastal regions, islands, and ocean floor within flying range of the Eastern Seaboard. Again nothing was found. Finally then, a large-scale search was conducted through the grounds and the buildings of Surway House itself, led by seven hundred volunteers from Spring Forge and other towns throughout the valley. Still they found nothing. Yesterday marked three months since Mr. Surway’s disappearance. The aircraft was legally declared lost, and its owner deceased. Mr. Surway, estimated for each of the past twelve years to be the wealthiest man in the Western Hemisphere, leaves behind no known relatives.

Title: Ifechidere

Author: Chinedu Enechi

Genre: Coming of Age

The loss of both her parents, even before she is old enough to speak, appears to pre-determine Ifechidere’s life. She is made to toil from dusk to dawn.

Yet, Ifechidere is no modern-day Cinderella, as she finds that faith in the will to survive, which is stronger than any absentee fairy godmother, will propel her to find herself. And it’ll lead her to the thing that was always meant to be

Book Excerpt:

The mourners wept even harder, when they looked at Obande’s children. Afoma, who was 15, had been the apple of her father’s eye. She was responsible, industrious and humane. Even during the times her mother maltreated Ifechi, Afoma got into trouble because she would always console Ifechi. Shortly after Ifechidere’s disappearance, Afoma had decided that she would become a lawyer in future, so that she would be able to fight more effectively for the less privileged. She also promised herself that she would look for Sister Ifechi and live with her.

Onukwube was now nearly 13; he was a different story. He was wild, rebellious and flagrantly irresponsible. Egged on by his mother’s pampering, he saw no reason to be any other way. Ogolo never allowed him to do chores in or around the house. She called him Onochie, insisting that males, especially those who were Onochie, were not supposed to any work. The house chores were therefore passed on to Afoma, as Ifechidere wasn’t there to do them. If Afoma was not around to do the work, their mother would do them.

Yet, Onukwube seemed to have a soft spot was his sister. It was either that, or he just loved any excuse to get into a fight. One day, their mother tried to punish Afoma because she dared to ask him to wash some plates. But he stood between his mother and sister, absolutely refusing to move and daring Ogolo to touch Afoma. On another day, Afoma returned from school, with her clothes in tatters. Onukwube was the only one at home. In tears, she said that a boy in her class, named Okenna, had fought with her. Onukwube went and sought out Okenna. Though Onukwube didn’t win the ensuing fight, he gave his opponent an unforgettable mark. He hit Okenna on the head with a stick, even after Okenna felled him to the ground. This was before passers-by separated them. They reprimanded Okenna, asking him why he chose to fight with the mad boy that everyone knew as Onukwube.

There was one incident that stood out in many people’s memories. It happened one morning, when Afoma had gone to fetch firewood and her mother had gone to fetch water. Obande woke up and called Onukwube to sweep the compound, when he noticed that Afoma and Ogolo were not at home. Onukwube refused to do the sweeping and Obande beat him. When Ogolo returned and met her son crying, she picked a fight with her husband. They created such a ruckus that villagers assembled to pacify husband and wife. Ogolo was insistent that her husband was trying to kill her only son. She claimed that Onukwube was the reincarnation of her late father; instead of respecting him, Obande wanted to send him into a second exile. Thee villagers sighed because they knew even before she said anything, what Ogolo would say. Onukwube usually had his mother as a shield. He was her favourite. Whenever she was not in school teaching, Ogolo could be seen fighting one teacher or the other, for disciplining her son. There was no limit to the lengths she would go, to protect her son. Even his school-mates were not spared; Ogolo had physically engaged with children who quarrelled or fought with Onukwube. It was no wonder he had no friends.

Onukwube was known as one of the villains of Nimbo community. Petty stealing was not beyond or beneath him. Whenever Onukwube entered any compound, something was bound to go missing. His infamy even extended to neighbouring villages of Uzo-Uwani; everyone called him a bad son and parents warned their children to avoid him. On one occasion when yet another case involving Onukwube had to be heard by the Igwe and his cabinet, Obande and Ogolo were summoned. But Ogolo was more defiant than usual, that day. She told the Igwe, in the hearing of all present, that he and his cabinet were envious of Onukwube; that was the only reason they often accused her precious son of stealing and other social vices. She then said that the Igwe was ‘an enemy of progress’ and that was why he didn’t have a son. It was because of the hardness of his heart and the atrocities he had committed, that the gods had punished him by withholding a son who would carry on his name, from him. That was why no matter how hard he tried, he had ended up fathering eight daughters.

Title: Murder at Midnight

Author: John Ukah

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Alex Simpson, an ex-police officer, decides after a bout of typhoid fever to take a break in a serene and therapeutic environment. The last thing he expects is to be called upon to solve a murder at the Kinging Guest Lodge. But that is what happens, when the delectable and vivacious Maria Marshall is found dead in her bedroom at midnight.

The gallery of characters living at the guesthouse and thrown into the mix, do not make his task of solving this chilling and brutal murder any easier …

“Have you set the rat poison?” I asked Ayuba, when he was filling my glass with water. And as if on cue, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria struck. We were all enveloped in darkness.

“Do sit still, everyone,” Ayuba cautioned. “I will get the generator working now.”

I heard him open the main door and go out. Someone was still walking around the dining area, in the dark. There was the harsh scraping sound of a chair moving across the terrazzo floor surface and the person sat down finally.

Ayuba and the generator had a good understanding. They had known each other for years. It purred and came to life. Soon enough, it was roaring like a wounded lion and the lights came back on. I looked around at everyone, they were all at their tables as calm as you please. I wondered which one of them had been moving about in the dark and why.

“I was asking you about the rat poison, Ayuba,” I said when he came back.

“It’s there on …” began Ayuba pointing to a shelf. But now his mouth was agape in surprise and he couldn’t seem to continue. His hand hung in space, still pointing at the shelf, as if held by a spell.

“What is it?” I asked him.

“The bottle of rat poison was on that shelf just before the lights went out, but it is no longer there now,” he explained, standing up to see better.

“Maybe someone accidentally knocked it over, when it was dark,” I suggested. We left the dining area and searched around the shelf and the bar area, but it was a waste of time.

“You’re sure it was here?” I asked.

“Yes, I saw it just before the lights went out.”

That was when Wahimda screamed.

“Ah! My tummy!” she shrieked, clutching at her stomach.

“What is it?” I asked going over to her. She was already on the floor.

She kept screaming, “My tummy! My tummy!”

Tonye almost jumped out of his skin. His eyes grew as wide as saucers. I was also startled by the piercing scream.

“Is she in labour?” Tonye asked no one in particular. His head seemed larger than usual.

“Maybe she had an abortion?” he suggested.

“Oh,  shut up, Tonye!” I snapped. Then, I went on my knees and tried to calm Wahimda. What was the matter with her?

“The hot chocolate! The hot chocolate!” said Wahimda. “Ah! The hot chocolate!” There were beads of perspiration and signs of agony on her face.

“The hot chocolate?” repeated Amina incredulously. “How do you mean?”

But Wahimda groaned louder.

“She had better answer right now,” said Tonye, impatiently.

“Wahimda,” I called, holding up her head and wiping off some of the perspiration with my handkerchief. “What is the matter?”

“The hot chocolate. It tasted funny like insecticide,” she said weakly, her eyes became glazed and she seemed to have difficulty keeping them open. “It tasted funny …” her voice trailed off as if she hadn’t the strength to continue.

“Oh, I see now,” said Tonye nodding his head sagely, as if everything was now crystal clear. He grinned at everyone with a moronic smile on his face. He reminded me of a cow having a good time in a grass field.

“But was it not normal chocolate?” asked Willie.

“It was,” Amina answered, looking bewildered.

“The rat poison!” said Ayuba in a sudden fit of inspiration.

“What happened to rat cousin?” asked Tonye with a blank expression on his face.

“The rat poison must have somehow found its way into the chocolate,’ explained a distraught Ayuba.

“It is not possible!” said Amina, with an emphatic shake of her head. “The bottle was never near where I made the hot chocolate. It was on that shelf until the lights went off.”

“Let’s get this young lady to the hospital,” said John.

We called for help from the policemen. They assisted in getting Wahimda into one of their police vans.

“Please, hurry!” Amina called out, as they went to the nearest hospital.

I wondered what had happened. Had Amina accidentally or deliberately put rat poison in Wahimda’s hot chocolate? But why would she want to hurt her husband’s cousin? Had someone else done so under the cover of darkness? Who moved when the lights went off? Had the young lady deliberately poisoned herself? But she was not the suicidal type! Or was she?

The other guests huddled and were asking themselves questions along similar lines. But where was the bottle of rat poison now? Empty or not, where was it?

I called out to Tonye, “Help me look around for the bottle of rat poison. Don’t touch it if you see it. Just show it to me.”

We began searching for it. Unfortunately, Tonye was hell-bent on following me around and searching in the very places where I put my hands to search. At a point, we were both under the same table. I had no idea he would try to get under the same table, as I was. We ended up knocking our heads together. Stars exploded before my eyes, as soon as my head struck his rocky head. I was pissed, to say the least. The others asked what we were looking for, when they saw me rubbing my head in pain. I stared at Tonye with deadly intent; he had the nerve to watch me in surprise, as if wondering what the matter was with me! I told them what we were looking for, then tried to get up, forgetting that I was still under the table. This time, when my head struck the table, I saw stars, comets and asteroids colliding and exploding.

About the Book lh004-sweet-cover-v02-front-cover

Title: Sweet

Author: Lisa Hahn

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Cat Brown spends the first six years of her career as one of the lowest-ranking members of the Bretton Falls Ballet. Despite the dancer’s undisputable talent, artistic director Lillian Smith insists Cat is too short for a leading role. When Lillian is forced to retire, world-renowned ballet dancer Dmitri Fedorov takes over and casts Cat as the premier performer in his first production with the company. Cat struggles to fend off a host of distractions as she prepares for the most important role of her career: the most insurmountable of which is her instant attraction to the new boss.

Dmitri, once known for his theatrical performances and womanizing proclivities, disappears into seclusion after a horrific car accident shatters his knee and renders him unable to dance. Looking to escape the constant reminders of how far he’s fallen, Dmitri escapes to Bretton Falls in hopes of elevating the small ballet company there to international prestige. The task proves to be more challenging than Dmitri had bargained for when his surprising interest in Cat Brown becomes fodder for gossip among the company.

Cat and Dmitri both have a lot riding on their upcoming production of The Nutcracker, knowing that their careers depend upon the outcome. However, the biggest challenge they face will be staying away from one another.

My Review:

This is indeed a sweet book. It has a rather simple story, but it’s written neatly, with nice characters that try to act as best as they can to fulfill their dreams but also not to cause problems for those around.

Cat is 100% dedicated to ballet. When she’s not dancing, she’s designing and sewing skirts for her and her best friend. She was never given the opportunity to shine in a major role until Dimitri Fedorov comes in her life. The ex ballet star, good looking and all, takes interest in her professionally and also personally. A nice love story starts, with both characters trying not to let their feelings get in the way of their careers.

On the positive side, I loved Cat and Dimitri very much. Both are doing their best to excel at ballet – Cat as a dancer and Dimitri as a director. Failure is not an option for any if them. A romance between a dancer and her boss is not the road to an impeccable career for any of them. They both are conflicted, but at the same time strong willed. The author has done a great job creating the characters as equals.

On the negative, there is not much to complain about.  I would have wanted a story just a little more complicated. But other than that, I don’t have anything bad to say.

Moral of this book could be: things have a way of arranging themselves in the right order. Which is what I need to believe right now. This book gave me the chance to start the year with a positive attitude so I recommend it with all my heart. Enjoy 🙂

About the Book

Title: Light In My Dark

Author: William Dresden and Jean Gilbertlimd-epup-cover

Genre: YA Fantasy

Sixteen-year-old Harper Deveraux has longed for an adventure ever since her mother died of cancer four years ago. Much to her dismay, she is stuck in Glen Eden, a small mountain town in upstate New York that does little to fuel her hopes and dreams.

Another year of high school has begun, and with the Moon Dance only a few weeks away, Harper suddenly finds herself torn between the affections of two boys: her best friend Jack, and a new boy from the City named Knes who might not be from this world.

Strange things begin to happen in Glen Eden when Harper uncovers a mystery that involved her mother and a realm shrouded in darkness that lies beyond the wall… A realm that Knes intends to take her to. Only Jack stands in his way.

Light In My Dark, is an action-packed modern YA fantasy, filled with dark forces, love, and self-discovery.

My Review:

An interesting read for the holiday season, this book throws us into a fantastic land, with a mysterious history that was left out of our books. While Harper tries to help the newcomer Knes integrate, she is dragged into his world and tries to figure out the connections between him and her dead mother. Harper’s best friend Jack sees some potential danger in the good looking guy from the city. Fueled by jealousy and concern for the girl he liked, he decides to uncover Knes’ story.

There are a lot of descriptive passages which sometimes are welcomed since they bring light to life on Noes, but there were also some scenes which did not need to be precisely told. There were times while reading it when I felt tired. But since half way through the book I still didn’t know much of the story, I went all the way till the end.

I liked how the authors decided to introduce Harper to the world beyond the wall, before Knes’ confession. So when he tells her the truth, she goes with him, more for her mother than for him. Jack goes head-on into the stage land, but lucky for him there are some on his side.

The characters are quite nice, Jack is my favorite since he’s trying to be there for Harper, even if she is clueless of his true feelings. He supports her decision of helping Knes integrate and even after she dumps him on the school dance to go with the “intruder”, he still doesn’t have any mean thoughts towards her. Harper and Knes make an intriguing combination. She feels some kind of attraction for him, but there are still some cells in her brain that ring “Danger”.

Well, it was quite a nice book to read. Hope you like too. Pop in to leave a comment and chat!

About the Book

damian-layla-book-coverTitle: Sunset Reads: Damian & Layla

Author: D.C. Triana

Genre: Romantic Suspense

One year.

It’s been one year since Agent Damian Trent left for Washington without a word.

One year since he’s seen her beautiful face.

One year since he’s heard his name on her lips.

He’s been recently called back to New York City on assignment, to catch a criminal who’s trying to infiltrate Sunset Reads. The last thing he expects is to work side by side with the woman he turned his back on.

Having her close is an unwanted distraction that he’s more than willing to ignore, if only she wasn’t so damn tempting.

Everything seems under control, until a night of feverish passion has him abandoning all thoughts of reason. Now, he will do everything in his power to get her back, and even more so to protect her.

Layla Reece wants nothing to do with the man who left her a year ago.

The man who took her heart with him, leaving her broken.

After a year of trying to forget Damian Trent, she is finally ready to move on.

But trying to forget him becomes a tedious task when he suddenly reappears in her life.

Although she fights to stay away, his magnetism is too strong and she finds herself giving into the deep timbre of his voice, and the strength and safety of his arms.

Staying away from Damian turns out to be futile, especially when his kisses consume her and his heart shatters the walls she spent so much time building.

Finding herself in danger, she now has to turn to the only man she trusts to keep her safe, but can she trust him enough to give him her heart once again?
