GENRE: Adventure/mystery

BLURB:MediaKit_BookCover_IntoTheJawsOfTheLion

This book is number 5 in a 7 book mystery/thriller/adventure series. It can, however, be read as a standalone.  The author is providing a summary of the Arkana series for the tour hosts’ convenience.

Where do you hide a mysterious artifact that has the power to change the course of history? You scatter clues to its whereabouts across the entire planet. Five objects buried beneath the rubble of ancient civilizations point to the hiding place of a mysterious artifact called the Sage Stone. A secret society and a fanatical religious cult vie against one another in a global treasure hunt to claim the prize. Only one can win. More importantly, only one can survive.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1—Knot Good

In A Foreign Land – Long Past Midnight

“Watch out!” The Pythia’s warning came too late.

Several dark figures swarmed from behind the boulders lining the trail, jumping Cassie and Griffin. Before the pair knew what was happening, they were body-slammed to the ground.

Half a dozen voices were talking at once, demanding answers in a language Cassie didn’t understand. She blinked as half a dozen flashlights pointed their intrusive beams in her face.

“What’s going on?” she asked dazedly. “Does anybody here speak English?”

More voices joined the hostile chorus. Rough hands reached out to drag her toward some unknown destination. She stumbled up a rock-strewn path and was thrust inside a small tent. Griffin was propelled in after her. Two of their assailants followed and forced them to sit back-to-back against the central tent pole, tethering their hands to the stake with thick hemp rope.

Without a word of explanation, their attackers left and shut the tent flap behind them. The voices outside continued to angrily debate some unknown topic.

Cassie tried to twist around but couldn’t. “Griffin?” she called anxiously. “Are you alright?” She felt the reassuring pressure of his fingers looping through hers.

“I’m fine, all things considered. And you?”

“Other than a few bruises, I’m OK too,” she answered.

The two of them sat back-to-back in silence for several moments, listening to the bellowing match outside.

The Scrivener shrugged philosophically. “On the whole, this night might have gone worse. Whoever they are, at least they didn’t kill us.”

“The night’s not over yet,” Cassie remarked ominously.

My Review:

Ok, this is a great adventure. I’ve experienced it and I am happy for that. I must admit though that this is the first book from the series I’ve read. Even if it was a little difficult to get accustomed with all the characters, I took some extra minutes to follow up on the first pages where the author was kind enough to explain the main titles and characters. Then we are thrown directly into the action.

It is a very complex story, with many characters and an action that takes place in the mystical lands of Tibet and Pakistan. There were times I couldn’t wait to turn the page. There’s an interesting combination between the matured characters and the innocence some of them show.

Even if it is a story of my taste, I wouldn’t recommend reading it as a stand-alone. Even if you will understand the subject, you will not be able to enjoy it on its fullest potential. I mean, the teams are complete, you know the good guys and the bad ones. It is interesting to see how they came together.

I hope you enjoy it, at least as much as I have. Please come back with a feedback if you do.

Book Review: The Count’s Lair

Reviews_TheCountsLair_Banner copy

GENRE: Paranormal romance

BLURB:

Count Anton Varga is haunted by the curse of the moon. It tugs on his emotions, ravishingMediaKit_BookCover_TheCountsLair his soul. Anton abhors the beast he must learn to tame if he is to find peace.

Lady Amelia Andrassy is an accomplished pianist, but her life in Budapest has been filled with heartache. When Amelia faints in the Duma’s bookstore, it’s Anton’s strong arms that cradle her fall. His unusual eyes spark with hers, replacing their individual loneliness with the promise of feral passion.

After a two-month separation, Anton is ready to walk into Amelia’s life again, but is Amelia ready to fan the spark they shared into a flame?

EXCERPT

Amelia went inside. The room was cast in obsidian shadows by a single candle burning on her dressing room table. The air was laced with the scent of mulberries. She grew warm. Her heart beat faster. Her defenses cracked.

“Anton?” she whispered.

He stepped out of the darkness behind her, placing his hands on her upper arms, pressing his chest against her back. His lips brushed against her ear, sending a shockwave through her. “You look wonderful tonight, Amelia.”

She dared to close her eyes and enjoy his embrace. “Anton.”

“Yes, it’s me.”

Warm feelings of longing stirred within her, only to be quickly doused by the sting of anger at his sudden departure. She stepped out of their embrace and spun to glare at him.

“How dare you.”

He backed away, confusion pooling in his unusual eyes. “I thought–”

“You thought what?”

“That you’d want to see me.”

“It’s been two months since I last saw you, and you didn’t even try to seek me out. I had no idea if you were dead, alive, or just too busy with your life to think of me.”

“I’m sorry.” His expression softened. “I had hoped to avoid the cool look in your eyes just now.”

Exasperated, she let out a quick breath. “You’re infuriating.” “So I’ve been told.”

 My Review:

I enjoyed this book very much, mostly because of its simplicity and characters. Amelia is a strong woman who is not waiting for a man to protect her or give her financial stability. After her husband’s death, she refused to return to England and focused on her career as a piano singer. She has built a beautiful friendship with Count Anton Varga, a friendship that will soon transform into more.

Even if in the past he was not considered one of the honorable persons, he felt a connection with Amelia and wants to change to win her heart. Still, he has a secret and before having her, she must learn of it and accept it. Anton is willing to start a relationship based on trust and love.

The book’s main focus is on the relationship between the two characters, but there is also some action which brings Anton face to face with his creator. Determined to protect a witch and her family by Marcus’ wrath, he will take her and her family into his house and offer them a stable environment. We have yet again a friendship based on mutual trust and understanding.

I liked very much how Anton decided to reveal his secret to Amelia, by giving her three clues. Also, his behavior once she realized what it was left me with a good impression about the character. Still, Amelia’s reactions seemed a little too calm if you ask me. I know it sounds silly, but that moment did not seem real enough.

Regardless, I give this book a total of 4 stars, for the clean writing, clean characters and good action. Congratulations to the author and if you decide to give it a try, come by and let me know your thoughts.

Book Blast: Deep

GENRE: Contemporary RomanceMediaKit_BookCover_Deep

BLURB:

Dark. Powerful. Dangerous.

Philip Murphy has all of Chicago under his thumb. Except me.

We met in a perfect storm of violence and lust. He saved me and then disappeared from my life. Now I pretend I never knew that kind of darkness. I focus on midterms and campus parties, as if they can wipe the slate clean.

Then he turns up outside my dorm room–wounded and barely conscious. He’s the head of a criminal empire, a powerful man, but he needs me now. There are traitors in his midst.

I can help him, but I can’t fall for him.

Not again.

Excerpt:

“Come on then. One free punch. I won’t stop you.”

Without meaning to, I moved my body to face him—as if I was really going to do it. As if I was really going to punch him. I wasn’t going to, though…was I? I wasn’t even sure. This felt so topsy-turvy, as if I was in a room full of fun-house mirrors again—or I had never left. I looked like myself but different too. Both scary and afraid.

“I’ll do it,” I threatened, holding up my fist. But I was mostly stalling for time. I didn’t think I could hit him. I wasn’t sure it would even hurt him if I did.

“Go ahead.” He glanced out the window beside me. “We’re almost there. The offer expires in three…two…”

The truth was he deserved worse than a punch for ruining my life. It wasn’t the classes I would miss most or the date with Sloan. It was the chance at a normal life. A chance to have a family. There were strands I’d been braiding my whole life, and he had come along to cut them.

Of course I wasn’t sure I could actually punch him, even if he deserved it. Not without him physically threatening me. Back then, when those men had come for me, I’d fought them. I’d even hit Shelly, pumped up on adrenaline and terror.

If someone was attacking me, I would have fought back. But hitting someone who was just sitting there? Hitting Philip? I couldn’t, no matter how much he deserved it.

“Hit me first,” I told him.

That startled a laugh out of him. “What?”

“Come at me. You start to hit me, then I’ll do it.”

“I’m not going to hit you, kitten.”

“Well, I can’t hit you any other way.”

He sighed. “You know this is ridiculous, right?”

“How is it ridiculous?” To my underwater brain, this made the most sense of anything. “You know you deserve it. And if I were more…you know, bloodthirsty…I would have already done it. This is just…just enabling me.”

One second he was sitting there regarding me with bemusement. The next he launched himself across the seat, his large body moving with surprising grace. I hadn’t taken into account how fast he could move. Of course he’d been strong. He could have overpowered me in a second. But he also moved like a goddamn panther, wrapping his hands around my wrists before I could blink. I didn’t even have time to pull my arm back, much less punch.

Instead he had my hands pressed against the side of the car, his body looming over mine, his hips between mine. His face was only inches away from me, gaze trained on my mouth.

“Like this?” he asked softly.

“Not fair.” My voice was breathless. A spark of heat between my legs reminded me that while my brain might have been mad at him and my heart might have felt conflicted, my body was one hundred percent on his team.

“Oh, I think it was completely fair. You wanted me to come at you. And that’s what I did. So hit me.”

I yanked my wrists, but he held strong. His eyes flared with arousal at watching me struggle. Oh God. I couldn’t deny I felt it too, the clench of delicious surrender. He was holding me down, and I loved it.

“Let go of me.”

“No, kitten. I’m just doing what you asked.” His lips brushed a millimeter from mine. “Enabling you.” The warmth of his breath was the only warning before he kissed me, fever-hot lips pressed against mine, his arms like iron bars around me. I melted into the seat, into the car—and against his body in the places we touched. My hips rocked against his, and he groaned into my mouth.

He lifted his head but left his body around me, an erotic cage. I blinked slowly, disoriented.

Only then did I realize the car had stopped moving.

“One,” he said softly, his eyes almost sympathetic. “Time’s up.”

Fiber

by Jennifer-Crystal Johnson

GENRE: Science Fiction

BLURB:MediaKit_BookCover_Fibers

Anna Reynolds is caught up in the middle of a secret interdimensional government agreement… and she doesn’t even know it.

There’s a medical anomaly loosely dubbed Morgellons disease afflicting a number of people. Symptoms include open sores that produce colorful string-like fibers, fatigue, and nightmarish visions of shadowy figures. No one knows where it came from. No one knows what causes it. There is no cure.

When Anna begins having nightmares and waking hallucinations of the shadow people, her uneasiness about her condition grows. Enlisting the help of her doctor and some friends, Anna is determined to find out what’s really going on and why Morgellons is such a mystery.

With her health declining and doubts about whom she can trust, is Anna doomed to become a slave to her condition? Or will she and her unlikely group of would-be heroes come through, saving her… and, ultimately, the world?

EXCERPT

As Anna walked home through the glistening streets of Deeplake, Washington, she adjusted her scarf and wrapped her coat around herself tightly, her breath fogging up the air in front of her. After a brief glance over her shoulder, she quickened her pace, her bag of groceries teetering in her arms momentarily as she readjusted her grip.

She’d been feeling like someone was watching or following her for weeks. At first she just shrugged it off as her own overactive imagination, but the other day, she could’ve sworn she saw a shadow out of the corner of her eye. When she looked, there was nothing there. That wasn’t the first time she had seen shadows. They were always there, just out of sight, their existence never confirmed by a direct glance. But every time it happened, she got goosebumps and the hair on the back of her neck stood on end like it does when you know someone is watching you.

Her left eye began to feel itchy and grainy as she walked, and she cursed herself for not driving. She blinked several times, but after a few moments her eye felt like it had sand in it again. This was accompanied by an unpleasant tickling sensation, which became annoying very quickly.

Her thoughts wandered as her eye got worse. She felt guilty but justified for not mentioning her problems to Casey, who had more than enough on her plate already. She also didn’t want to come across as crazy; Anna was certain she wasn’t. Some of the recent events in her life were crazy, but she was definitely sane.

Do crazy people think they’re sane?
