Book Review: The Wrong Game by Kandi Steiner

Title: The Wrong Game

Blurb:

Two season tickets.

One genius idea.

Zero interest in a relationship.

The plan is simple: a brand new, hot, preferably funny, definitely single male will fill one of those seats for every Bears game at Soldier Field. And I’ll fill the other.

I can’t think of a better way to use the season passes I’d bought for my ex-husband. I am a woman of plans, and this one’s foolproof.

Until Zach Bowen offers to be my practice round.

He’s infuriating. Presumptuous and overbearing. And absolutely, undeniably gorgeous. Any woman with a heartbeat would be attracted to him, and mine picks up speed every time he speaks.

But as I said, I’m a woman of plans — and I’m not backing down on this one.

One night. One game. And then, his time’s up.

He can try to change the rules, but here’s the truth: he can’t win if he’s playing the wrong game.

My Review

Can you imagine this is my first Kandi Steiner book? With my blog thanking a more romance focused turn, one would think I am no stranger to her books, but unfortunately this was not the case. Thanks to one of my favorite booktubers Jess from Peace Love Books (go ahead and check out her channel, she is fantastic! ) I fell in love with Kandi Steiner and her characters.

The beginning was heartbreaking! What happened there was a total surprise and it made me love Gemma from the start. This event is what determines her next steps and it makes the reader more understanding towards her decision not for start another relationship. Even from their first encounter Zach is amazing. He gives her space (until he is no longer able to), he fight for her attention and he is not willing to give her up.

What starts as an innocent “tryout” be ones a competition, a friendship and later much more. I love how the author created all these stages in the relationship and how our main characters’ actions and reactions feel real and relatable. Family also plays an important role and being able to count on family members to always be there and offer support is amazing. Best friends meddling add a bit of fun to the story also.

The reason I am not going with a full 5 star rating is because between the games u found myself skipping rows here and there, mainly because if was not much to keep me entertained. Some of the scenes help built Zach’s personality and others underline even more Gemma’s need for closure. I wish she would have made peace somehow with her past and for me it feels like a loose end.

But all in all, I loved this book very much and I cannot wait to read more of Kandi’s books.

Until next time, happy reading!

Cover review:: I like how the word “Wrong” stands out in the title and the color combination is relaxing somehow to the eyes. The couple looks too in love for the amount of tension that we have between Zach and Gemma. But overall, I like it.

Favorite quote: Failed love built wall, but it was our choice whether we decided to hide behind them, or sit on top of them, waiting for someone to come along who could knock them down

About the Author

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.
